As we know that microcontroller has very small current at the output port. So that it cannot drive a motor if it is directly connected. So that it needs a driver named L293D. I have directly connected to the microcontroller in my simulation circuit. It is necessary to connect motor through driver L293D.
This is a nice project. It can be used in industry for controlling robot by moving it to left, right, forward, backward or stop. I have connected two motor to the pin p0.0,p0.1,p0.2,p0.3. LCD is also connected to the microcontroller that display the status of pressed key. We can control these motor using keyboard connected to the either LAPTOP or PC. I have implemented this circuit on proteus. Its very simple. You can also implement it on hardware.
